Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium

The stadium paid for itself in sixteen sellouts at five dollars a ticket. Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium at 335 South Hollywood Street opened on 16 September 1965 as Memphis Memorial Stadium, a 3.7-million-dollar bowl on the old Mid-South Fairgrounds dedicated to the city's war dead - and built in large part to give the wandering Liberty Bowl a permanent home. The bet paid immediately: the Liberty Bowl arrived that December and has been played here every year since, the city renamed the stadium for the game in 1975, and the AutoZone-sponsored bowl remains one of the oldest non-New Year's bowls in college football. The University of Memphis Tigers have filled the autumn calendar since opening day, joined over the decades by a roll call of upstart pro football - the WFL Southmen, USFL Showboats, CFL Mad Dogs, XFL Maniax and one 1997 season of the Tennessee Oilers awaiting their Nashville stadium. The bowl grew lopsided-to-balanced through renovations - the 19.5-million-dollar 1987 expansion pushed capacity past 62,000, later reseatings brought it to 58,325 and then near 50,000 - while 2013's 38-million-dollar Tiger Lane project rebuilt the approach as a tailgating boulevard. Concert history matches the football: Elvis-era spectaculars gave way to stadium tours, and the Southern Heritage Classic every September has grown into one of Black college football's premier events alongside its concert week. OVG360 manages the 136-acre Liberty Park complex today under the Simmons Bank name, with ongoing renovations targeting a modernised 45,000-seat configuration - the 1965 memorial still working as Memphis's biggest stage. The stadium's place in Memphis music history includes its own festival era - the Beale Street Music Festival's stadium editions and one-off stadium concerts from the Rolling Stones to country package tours - and Tiger Lane's grass boulevard has made game-day tailgating itself a signature event on the fairgrounds the stadium inherited.
