The bar calls itself a downtown sanctuary and enforces it: all weirdos welcome, no discrimination tolerated. Sister at 407 Central Avenue NW opened on 11 October 2012 in downtown Albuquerque's historic Sunshine-era commercial strip, a 360-capacity live venue wrapped inside a bar, kitchen and vintage arcade. The booking is the draw for touring bands crossing the desert: a curated calendar mixing national indie, punk, metal and hip-hop acts with the best of the local scene, plus dance nights that keep the floor working between shows - of Montreal and Dent May-tier acts route through regularly. The pinball operation is serious enough to have its own community: fifteen-plus machines rotated and maintained with documented care, weekly New Mexico Pinball meetups on Tuesdays and a monthly tournament schedule that draws players statewide. The bar side runs 37 draught lines - one of the deepest tap walls in New Mexico - alongside a cocktail program and a kitchen turning out tacos, burgers, burritos and fries until 10pm. The Central Avenue address is old Route 66, steps from the KiMo Theatre and the downtown bar crawl, giving the 21-plus room a walk-in crowd most dedicated venues have to manufacture. A decade in, Sister has become the connective tissue of Albuquerque's scene - the room where touring buzz bands, local record releases and pinball leagues share a single address seven nights a week. The building itself carries downtown history - a narrow early-twentieth-century storefront whose pressed-tin details survive above the stage lights - and the venue's all-are-welcome door policy has made it the default safe room for Albuquerque's queer, punk and DIY communities, a role the owners treat as part of the business model rather than a slogan. Weekend brunch service and patio seating extend the room's daytime trade through the year.
