Sons of Hermann Hall

Kelly Clarkson auditioned for American Idol in a German lodge hall with a haunted reputation and a bar shipped from the old country. Sons of Hermann Hall at 3414 Elm Street in Deep Ellum was built in 1910-11 by four Dallas lodges of the German fraternal order, designed by William Martens as a supposedly temporary frame building - now the last surviving wood-frame commercial structure in downtown Dallas. The building was made for gathering from day one: an upstairs ballroom for dancing, a ground-floor bar with its carved wooden back-bar sent from Germany, and a bowling alley added around 1917 whose original lanes still floor the Old Bowling Alley room. The music history earns the landmark plaque the city granted in 1987: decades of Texas songwriters, western swing, honky-tonk and roots acts have played the roughly 500-capacity ballroom, and the weekly swing dance every Wednesday is a Dallas institution in its own right. The pop-culture cameos stack up - RoboCop shot scenes inside, and the American Idol audition stop that launched Kelly Clarkson ran through the hall - while the Thursday Campfire acoustic jam keeps the songwriter tradition alive weekly. The lodge still exists behind the venue operation, making the building one of the country's rare fraternal halls that never stopped being one - it simply added concerts, weddings and film shoots to the original mandate. The Deep Ellum location puts a 1911 frame building at the centre of Dallas's densest live-music district, a creaking wooden survivor among the neon and brick. The building runs on volunteers and lodge stewardship rather than corporate ownership, which explains both its creaks and its survival - the bar still pours cheap longnecks under pressed-tin ceilings, the ballroom floor still flexes underfoot on swing night, and the ghost stories that come with a 1911 fraternal hall are retold at the bar as part of the furniture.
