St. James Hall

Vancouver's folk music lives in a century-old church sanctuary with an oak sprung dance floor. St. James Hall at 3214 West 10th Avenue in Kitsilano - officially the Mel Lehan Hall at St. James Community Square - has hosted community gatherings for over ninety years, its Heritage Register building anchoring the corner where West 10th meets the neighbourhood's residential streets. The Rogue Folk Club made the hall its home in 2004, and Steve Edge's organisation - fifty-plus concerts a year of folk, roots, Celtic and world music since 1987 - turned the room into western Canada's most consistent acoustic venue, drawing touring artists from Scotland, Ireland, Quebec and Appalachia. The room rewards the booking: capacity of 366 (227 when the bar is licensed), a permanent raised stage, warm wood acoustics that suit unamplified instruments, and the sprung floor that turns ceilidhs and family dances into full-hall participation events. The renaming honoured the community: Mel Lehan, the neighbourhood organiser who led the campaign that saved the building when it went up for sale - the City of Vancouver bought the property and leased it long-term to the nonprofit society that operates it. The building works as civic infrastructure beyond the concerts - a gym, daycare, preschool and multipurpose rooms drive over 500,000 user visits a year, with the hall hosting weddings, memorials, theatre, art shows and film shoots between show nights. Early Music Vancouver and other presenters share the calendar with the Rogue, making the Kitsilano hall the rare Vancouver room where medieval consorts, Quebecois trad bands and bluegrass headliners all sound like they belong. Concert nights run on volunteer crews and home-baked concession tables - the folk-club economics that keep ticket prices humane - and the hall's high-speed livestream connection, added in recent years, lets the Rogue's more far-flung audience join the room that Vancouver's acoustic community considers its living room.
