The sanctuary of an old Denver church now holds the concert hall of the nation's second-largest acoustic music school. Daniels Hall at 71 East Yale Avenue is the flagship room of Swallow Hill Music, the nonprofit founded in 1979 out of Harry Tuft's Denver Folklore Center - the folk institution that moved into the converted church at Broadway and Yale in 1998 under executive director Chris Daniels. The hall seats 299 in the former sanctuary, named for the musical Daniels family, and its warm wood acoustics and sightlines make it Denver's definitive listening room for folk, roots, bluegrass, blues and songwriter shows. The organisation around it is the story: some 250 concerts a year across Daniels Hall, the smaller Tuft Theatre and the Quinlan Cafe, plus the partnership series at the Denver Botanic Gardens that has presented Steve Martin and Sheryl Crow to lawn crowds. The school side hosts 64,000 student visits annually - twenty thousand private lessons, twelve hundred group classes, seventy teachers - trailing only Chicago's Old Town School among American acoustic music schools. The outreach arm creates more than 75,000 music connections a year in under-resourced schools, senior centres and transitional housing across the Front Range, and the Colorado Music Hall of Fame inducted the organisation in 2019. The Yale Avenue building keeps all of it under one roof - classrooms feeding the stage, jam sessions feeding the classes - a folk-music ecosystem where the audience, the students and the performers are substantially the same people. The organisation's earlier homes - the Folklore Center storefront and a cramped Pearl Street walk-up - are part of its founding mythology, and the annual jam sessions, ukulele circles and toddler classes that fill the Yale Avenue building by day mean Daniels Hall's evening audiences routinely include people who learned their first chords two doors down.
