TD Garden

New England's biggest room sits on top of a train station, carrying the weight of a building it replaced and a century of banners. TD Garden at 100 Legends Way opened on September 30, 1995, directly above the MBTA's North Station, succeeding the 1928 Boston Garden after two decades of failed replacement plans finally broke loose in 1993. The $160 million arena was one of the few in America financed almost entirely with private money - $120 million loaned by three banks to Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs' Delaware North - and its name has tracked bank mergers ever since: Shawmut Center during construction, FleetCenter at opening after Fleet bought Shawmut (every seat with a Shawmut logo had to be replaced), TD Banknorth Garden in 2005, and TD Garden from 2009, with naming rights extended to 2045. The opening ceremonies featured the Boston Pops, Nancy Kerrigan and James Taylor; the Bruins skated their first game on October 7, 1995, and the Celtics followed in November, and both franchises have played every home season here since. Capacity runs 19,156 for basketball, 17,850 for hockey and roughly 20,000 for concerts across ten levels and 755,000 square feet, with renovations in 2006, 2014 and a major 2019 round that added seats and connected the building to the Hub on Causeway development on the old Garden footprint. The calendar beyond the two tenants is the deepest in the region: the annual Beanpot college hockey tournament, Hockey East championships, the Ringling Brothers circus, Disney On Ice, WWE, and virtually every arena-scale tour passing through New England - nearly 3.5 million visitors a year, the most visited sports and entertainment building in the six states. History keeps accumulating: Barack Obama delivered his breakout 2004 Democratic National Convention speech here, and the Sports Museum on the second-floor concourse curates the Celtics and Bruins legacies the building inherited - seventeen NBA championships and six Stanley Cups between them.
