Terminal West

An iron smelting room where plows were forged now smelts something else entirely. Terminal West opened in March 2012 inside the King Plow Arts Center at 887 West Marietta Street in West Midtown Atlanta, a 7,000-square-foot music hall carved out of the 1902 factory complex that the King Plow Company ran until 1986. The plant's conversion into artist studios in 1990 made King Plow the largest arts center of its kind in the city - sixteen buildings across 12.5 acres - and Terminal West arrived two decades later when Robert Shaw and Alan Sher, who had been managing concerts on the campus, decided to build a proper venue. The room holds 625 standing with a balcony ringing the floor, modern production hung from the original factory bones, and an outdoor roof deck overlooking the historic train tracks that gave the venue its name - the smelting room's industrial aesthetic preserved rather than painted over. The early booking leaned electronic - the venue won Creative Loafing's Best New Venue award in 2012 on the strength of its dubstep and dance calendar - before broadening into the indie rock, hip-hop, folk and R&B mix that now fills most nights. Two bars pour canned craft beer from the likes of 21st Amendment, Oskar Blues and Sierra Nevada, and the venue connects to Stationside, the arts center's restaurant, which stays open through every show. AEG Presents took ownership with Georgia promoter Zero Mile operating from 2019, plugging the room into national tour routing while keeping the mid-size intimacy that made it West Midtown's essential stage - close enough to see the sweat, big enough to matter on an itinerary. The venue's balcony gives an eagle-eye view of the stage that regulars guard jealously, and the roof deck between sets - trains rumbling past below - has become as much a part of the Terminal West ritual as the show itself, a pause built into the night that few standing rooms of this size can offer.
