Dallas hid a 302-acre ranch inside its own city limits. The Texas Horse Park at 811 Pemberton Hill Road sits deep in the Great Trinity Forest, the 6,200-acre hardwood wilderness along the Trinity River, and opened to the public with a community celebration on March 28, 2015 - city council members cutting the ribbon on horseback. The facility itself runs to an activity center, three horse barns, two covered arenas, a trailhead pavilion and a web of riding trails threading out into the forest, all styled with ranch architecture that nods to the early days of Texas farming along the river. Two non-profits operate the grounds: Equest, founded in Texas in 1981, delivers therapeutic riding classes and hippotherapy to roughly 500 riders a year with 35 horses and a dozen certified instructors, including dedicated programs for active service members and veterans. River Ranch Educational Charities handles the public-facing side - trail rides, riding lessons, school tours, hayrides, kids' parties, weddings, arena events and corporate getaways - with scholarships extending access to low-income and special-needs communities and free activities every third Thursday of the month. The result is a working equestrian venue fifteen minutes from downtown that doubles as an events destination: arena shows and Western-style gatherings on the program calendar, with the sculpture Equine Rhythm by Curtis Patterson greeting visitors at the entrance since opening day. The park's setting inside the Great Trinity Forest puts riders among hardwood trees, ponds and meadows that feel a state away from the skyline visible on the drive in, and the trail network connects to the wider corridor of Audubon Center paths and river greenways that have turned South Dallas's floodplain into the city's largest recreation asset.
