The Drake Underground

Billie Eilish played to 150 people in this basement; so did Beck. The Drake Underground is the subterranean venue of the Drake Hotel at 1150 Queen Street West, opened with the hotel's Valentine's Day 2004 relaunch and run ever since as one of Toronto's most influential small rooms. The scale is the entire point: 150 capacity, a low stage, a bar along the wall and the audience close enough to read the setlist - the room where the Drake's programming team books tomorrow's theatre acts at club size. The twenty-year ledger reads absurdly for the room's size: M.I.A., Billie Eilish, Beck, Leon Bridges, Brent Faiyaz, Martha Wainwright, Slowdive's Neil Halstead, Peaches, Metric, Broken Social Scene and Skratch Bastid, across an estimated 4,000 shows running about 200 a year. The programming spreads wider than concerts - comedy, DJ nights, film events, Hot Docs screenings, album launches and the hotel's own curated series share the calendar - making the basement the working cultural engine under the boutique operation upstairs. The room's position in the ecosystem is distinctive: attached to a hotel with in-house food, drink and lodging, it can host a touring artist's entire Toronto footprint under one roof, a model closer to Austin's hotel-venue hybrids than to the city's traditional clubs. Twenty years in - the anniversary celebrated in 2024 with a West Queen West throwback party hosted by Broken Social Scene's Brendan Canning - the Underground remains what Jeff Stober built it to be: the small dark heart of the Drake's big cultural machine. The room's bookers have long used the space as a bet-placing operation - securing rising international acts on their first Canadian dates before the arenas notice - which is why Toronto music fans habitually scan the Underground listings for names that will be unaffordable within eighteen months, and why the basement's alumni wall keeps needing new rows.
