A lead smelter that went dark in 1950 reopened as Fishtown's biggest stage. The Fillmore Philadelphia at 29 East Allen Street opened on October 1, 2015 with hometown heroes Daryl Hall and John Oates, anchoring a 32-million-dollar conversion of the Ajax Metal Company plant - a brick complex built out between 1893 and 1944 that once refined brass, tin, copper and lead. Live Nation's designers kept the industrial archaeology deliberately legible: exposed brick, steel beams, the original fire doors reassembled into a facade, a bar built from salvaged Ajax lumber, and the historic smokestack rising straight through the building - all listed on the National Register of Historic Places the year before the venue opened. The main hall holds 2,500 across two levels, dressed in the Fillmore franchise signatures - chandeliers and vintage posters - with movable curtain walls and adjustable production that let the room scale down convincingly to 700 or run 1,200 fully seated. Upstairs, the 450-capacity Foundry operates as a club within the club with its own bar, stage and production, developing local acts and hosting DJs; the wider building shares its footprint with a bowling alley, a distillery and the Punch Line comedy club in a block-long entertainment campus. The opening was pitched by House of Blues Entertainment as the most beautiful venue in its 58-room chain, and the preservation community agreed enough to hand the project the Preservation Alliance's Economic Impact Award - a rare accolade for a rock club. A decade in, the room has become Philadelphia's default mid-size stop between the theatres and the arenas, home to the annual Decibel Metal and Beer Fest and a steady run of rock, hip-hop, country and electronic tours routing through Fishtown. The venue's success helped tip the surrounding blocks: the corner of Frankford and Delaware, derelict for decades between I-95 and the river, now trades as one of the city's densest nightlife districts, with the smokestack of the old Ajax works lit up as its landmark.
