John Barrymore put money into this theatre before it had a name that would stick. The Fonda at 6126 Hollywood Boulevard opened on October 20, 1926 as Carter DeHaven's Music Box, a Spanish Colonial Revival house by Morgan, Walls and Clements whose first investors included Barrymore, John Gilbert, King Vidor and Mae Murray, and whose rooftop cabaret doubled as a Prohibition speakeasy. The 31,000-square-foot building lived a full Hollywood century: Ziegfeld-style revues, legitimate theatre, a radio studio in the 1930s, then thirty-two years as a cinema - the Guild, the Fox, and finally the Pix, where Jaws premiered on the Boulevard in 1975 - before closing as a movie house in 1977. A live-theatre revival renamed it the Henry Fonda Theatre in the 1980s, and a 2002 restoration began stripping the Streamline Moderne sheet metal that had covered the original facade since 1945, returning the Roaring Twenties architecture to view. Goldenvoice took over in 2012, leveled the main floor, and relaunched the room as the Fonda Theatre - a 1,200-capacity general-admission house with a balcony of original seats, an open-air rooftop patio and one of the most atmospheric interiors on the Boulevard. LA Weekly named it the city's best venue in 2015, and the booking has kept the compliment honest: career-launching residencies, underplays by arena acts and a steady run of indie, rock, hip-hop and electronic tours use the Fonda as their Hollywood room of choice. The location earns the room its underplay traffic - steps from the Hollywood/Vine Metro station in the heart of the Boulevard - and the rooftop bar between sets remains one of the neighborhood's quiet privileges. A century after DeHaven's Fancies revue opened the house, the Fonda operates as the connective tissue of the Goldenvoice ladder: the step after the El Rey and Roxy, the step before the Shrine and the Palladium, and for many artists the first Los Angeles marquee with their name in genuine movie-palace lights.
