The club is named for a river you cannot see. The Garrison at 1197 Dundas Street West in Toronto opened on October 1, 2009 with a sold-out Glass Candy show, founded by Shaun Bowring and named for Garrison Creek, the buried waterway that runs beneath the neighborhood - a nod sealed, by his own admission, when the craft-beer nerd in him learned Toronto's first breweries drew from the same creek. Bowring arrived with credentials: from 2003 to 2009 he booked Sneaky Dee's through the era when METZ, Broken Social Scene, PUP, Fucked Up and Arcade Fire were cutting their teeth there, and the Garrison was built to give that ecosystem a proper 300-capacity room. The formula is the classic Toronto two-room: a bar in the front for conversation and craft beer, a dark live room in the back with good sightlines and a sound system that punches above the room's size - ideal for the local and touring indie rock that anchors the calendar. The bookings range wider than the indie tag suggests - Ben Frost's harsh electronics, Jazz Cartier's hip-hop, King Khan's garage chaos - and the room is a fixture of the city's festival circuit, hosting Canadian Music Week, North by Northeast, Just For Laughs and the Wavelength Music Festival. The Ossington-and-Dundas corner the Garrison helped anchor in 2009 has since become one of Toronto's densest music-and-restaurant strips, and the venue's continued independence - owner-operated, artist-first - is increasingly rare in a consolidating concert market. In 2016 Bowring extended the ladder downward with the Baby G, a 150-capacity satellite room a kilometre west, explicitly so local bands intimidated by the Garrison's 300-person floor had a smaller stage to grow on. After a 19-month pandemic closure the room reopened in 2021 and resumed its role without missing a step: the Garrison remains the west end's reliable middle rung, the room where Toronto goes to catch a band eighteen months before everyone else does.
