The owner told his sound engineer he wanted the best-sounding room in Portland, and rebudgeted the whole project when the answer was "not with these speakers." The Get Down opened in April 2022 at 615 SE Alder Street, Suite B - a 400-capacity basement venue inside the historic Melody Event Center in the Central Eastside industrial district. Founder Blake Boris-Schachter's answer to what the room would book was simple: primarily stuff you can dance to - and the space was engineered around that brief, with a broad open floor whose polished surface gives it what regulars describe as a roller-rink vibe, built to be a really good place to intentionally dance. The sound investment became the venue's calling card: a Meyer Sound system - the marque used by acts like the Grateful Dead - installed and then calibrated over three days by a factory specialist, tuned with white noise until the response held even across the room. The lead engineer came from the Doug Fir Lounge, previously the consensus best-sounding room in the city, making the Get Down a deliberate bid for that title - one that reviewers and touring engineers have largely endorsed. The calendar mixes touring electronic acts, funk, soul, jazz, hip-hop and indie rock with DJ nights, dance parties and the Lose Yr Mind festival, plus comedy showcases and private events - a genre spread united by the danceability test. The venue's position inside the Melody Event Center gives it a bigger sibling upstairs for overflow-scale events, and the Central Eastside location puts it among the breweries and late-night kitchens of Portland's densest going-out district east of the river. Arriving as Portland's venue stock was still recovering from the pandemic, the Get Down filled the exact gap the Doug Fir's closure would soon widen: a 400-person room with audiophile sound where the city's dance-floor-first bookings have a permanent home.
