Baltimore wanted what Boston had, so it built a copy of Amsterdam's greatest concert hall and opened it with the Boston Symphony. The Lyric at 140 West Mount Royal Avenue opened as the Music Hall on October 31, 1894, modeled on the Concertgebouw, with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and soprano Nellie Melba on the inaugural bill. The names tracked the eras: the Music Hall became the Lyric Opera House in 1909, carried the Patricia and Arthur Modell Performing Arts Center name after a 3.5-million-dollar gift in 2010, and reverted to Lyric Baltimore on March 31, 2021. The resume runs deep even by grand-hall standards: the Metropolitan Opera has toured to the Lyric since 1904, the Baltimore Symphony called it home from 1916 to 1982, and in 1934 Rachmaninoff himself premiered his Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini on its stage. The building has been rescued repeatedly - a 1928 renovation added hundreds of balcony seats, and the 14-million-dollar 1980-82 overhaul rebuilt the entrance, lobby and backstage to relaunch the hall as a Broadway-capable opera house. Twenty-first-century work finished the modernization: a 95-foot stage house and expanded technical fit-out in the 2010-11 round gave the 2,564-seat hall the depth to take full touring productions the old stage could never hold. The modern calendar is broad - touring Broadway, concerts, comedy, dance, gospel and graduations - programmed by the nonprofit Lyric Foundation, with the hall's Renaissance Revival auditorium and composer-inscribed proscenium intact on the National Register. Citizen campaigns have saved the Lyric at least half a dozen times across thirteen decades, which is the building's real distinction: Baltimore's oldest working concert hall survives because the city keeps refusing to let it close. The hall's acoustic pedigree still draws classical bookings alongside the Broadway runs, and the Mount Royal Avenue address anchors Baltimore's cultural corridor beside the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and the University of Baltimore - a concentration of stages that began when the Music Hall's 1894 opening pulled the city's concert life north of the harbor.
