The Milwaukee Mile

Cars have raced here every year since 1903 - nothing else on earth can say that. The Milwaukee Mile at Wisconsin State Fair Park in West Allis is the oldest operating motor speedway in the world, a one-mile oval that began as a private horse track in 1876 and hosted its first automobile race on September 11, 1903, when William Jones of Chicago won a five-lap contest at 50 miles per hour. The Agricultural Society of Wisconsin bought the grounds in 1891 as the permanent home of the State Fair, and the track has been the fair's roaring centerpiece ever since - dirt-surfaced until 1954, when the mile was finally paved. The open-wheel pedigree is unmatched outside Indianapolis: championship racing under AAA, USAC, CART and IndyCar sanctions ran from 1933 to 2015, and for decades the first race after the Indianapolis 500 was traditionally held at the Mile. NASCAR wrote its own chapters - Busch Grand National and Craftsman Truck series races through the 1990s and 2000s - and the infield holds a 1.8-mile road course that has hosted sports car and motorcycle competition. The infield's stranger resume includes the Dairy Bowl football era: the Green Bay Packers played occasional home games here between 1934 and 1951, including the 1939 NFL Championship, a 27-0 Packers win over the New York Giants; in July 1969 the grounds hosted a rock festival with Led Zeppelin, Blind Faith and Joe Cocker. A 2002-03 renovation rebuilt the main grandstand with roughly 37,000 seats, and the state-owned facility runs today under Wisconsin State Fair Park management with racing, testing and event traffic year-round. A century and a quarter of unbroken racing - paused only by the World Wars - makes the Mile less a venue than a working monument: America's Legendary Oval, still selling grandstand tickets on the same dirt-turned-asphalt where motorsport's first generation ran.
