The Mod Club

The Weeknd played some of his first shows here, and the room owes its existence to a Platinum Blonde frontman's obsession with 1960s Britain. The Mod Club at 722 College Street in Toronto's Little Italy opened in 2002, founded by Mark Holmes - lead singer of Canadian rockers Platinum Blonde - and partner Bobbi Guy, who turned a pool hall called the Corner Pocket into a permanent home for their mod-culture club nights. The 618-capacity hall became a Toronto institution across two decades: Amy Winehouse, Muse, John Mayer, Katy Perry, the Killers and Sia all played it, while Holmes deejayed as DJ MRK with Thursday nights broadcast live on 102.1 The Edge from 2003 to 2007. The room's geometry does the work - a 24-by-18-foot stage, tight floor, side tables and a second-floor balcony - with mod-subculture murals and video panels keeping the founding aesthetic in view. COVID lockdowns ended the first era in 2020; the venue reopened in late 2021 as the Axis Club after a renovation that stripped the tiered floor for capacity and added a multi-camera livestream and production rig. Owner Manuel DaCosta partnered with Live Nation Canada in 2023, and on June 14, 2025 the venue rebranded back to its original name with a Daniel Caesar concert during NXNE - a homecoming for a room where Caesar, like the Weeknd, had played pivotal early shows. The calendar runs touring indie, hip-hop, electronic and rock alongside club nights, holding the 600-capacity rung of Toronto's venue ladder between the clubs and the Danforth and Phoenix-scale halls. Little Italy's marquee venue thus completes a full circle: same address, same size, same name - with twenty years of star-making history restored to the sign above the door. The venue's production upgrades from the Axis years survive the name change - the multi-camera broadcast rig lets the room double as a daytime production facility, and livestreamed shows extend the 618-person hall to remote audiences - modern infrastructure wrapped in the original mod-revival identity.
