A retail space inside a parking garage became one of the country's benchmark collegiate gaming venues. The Butler Esports Park at 4702 Sunset Avenue, Suite 900, on the Butler University campus in Indianapolis opened in fall 2022 - a 7,320-square-foot facility designed by stadium architects Populous as an adaptive reuse of the Sunset Avenue garage's ground floor. The hardware room reads like a broadcast studio crossed with an arcade: more than fifty high-performance gaming PCs, console and virtual reality stations, and a professional studio and production suite for live tournament broadcasts, streams and content creation. The park is the home of Butler's varsity and club esports programs - team training, scrimmage and competition space - but the front door is deliberately public: hourly open play, memberships, camps and corporate team-building all run alongside the collegiate calendar. The design brief was a community hub rather than a campus lab: leasable offices house esports industry tenants including Beastcoast and Challonge, coworking and event spaces host lectures and seminars, and a student-run acai bowl business, Chimba Bowls, feeds the room. Tech-enhanced outdoor lounge areas extend the facility toward campus, and the flexible floor converts for tournaments, watch parties, academic programming and technology events serving the wider Indianapolis scene. Populous - the firm behind arenas and stadiums worldwide - positioned the project as a trendsetter in collegiate esports, giving a mid-size private university one of the sector's most complete public-facing venues. The bet reflects Indianapolis' broader push to brand itself as a gaming and tech events city, with the Esports Park as the campus-scale proof: a venue where varsity competition, community play and broadcast production share the same square footage.
