The Phoenix Theatre Company - Judith Hardes Theatre

The smallest room on Arizona's biggest theatre campus is where the risks get taken. The Judith Hardes Theatre at 1825 North Central Avenue is the intimate stage of the Phoenix Theatre Company, a roughly 112-seat house on the company's Central Arts District campus at Central Avenue and McDowell Road. The company it serves is the state's founding arts institution: begun as the Phoenix Players in 1920 and resident on this ground since the Heard family's coach house became its home in 1924, incorporated in 1928 and never dark since - including through the Second World War. The Hardes' scale defines its programming: solo shows, chamber plays, cabaret evenings and new-work development where a hundred-odd seats wrap close around the action - the closest thing Phoenix has to an off-Broadway house. The room carries the name of longtime benefactor Judith Hardes, part of the philanthropic base that has funded the campus's successive expansions, including the 2013 build-out and the 500-seat Stephenson Theatre that opened in 2025. The three-stage campus - Hardes, the 250-seat Hormel black box and the Stephenson - lets the company run more than 600 performances a year with each production sized to its natural audience. Everything on stage is made on site by the company's own shops, and the Festival of New American Theatre cycles emerging playwrights through the small rooms each season. In a company more than a century old, the Hardes plays the essential supporting role: the small stage that keeps Arizona's oldest theatre nimble. The room also carries the company's education and community load: Partners That Heal workshops, student matinees and post-show conversations run naturally at its scale, and for Phoenix audiences the Hardes is where the company's relationship with its city feels most like the coach-house era it grew from - a hundred people, close enough to touch the work.
