California's oldest orchestra built itself a concert hall without walls, on a park it shares with joggers and fishermen. The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park opened on August 5, 2021 on the Embarcadero Marina Park South peninsula in downtown San Diego - an 85-million-dollar permanent outdoor venue operated by the San Diego Symphony, founded in 1910. The design by Tucker Sadler Architects is radically porous: a 3,865-square-foot covered stage faces a sloped artificial-turf lawn separated from the public park by little more than a waist-high gate, with San Diego Bay and the skyline as the set. Capacity flexes from about 2,000 to 10,000 with temporary seating only, so the lawn reverts to public parkland on non-concert days; the symphony is limited to 110 half-day ticketed events a year, only six at full capacity - a civic bargain written into the lease with the Port of San Diego. The funding was almost entirely philanthropic - 15 million dollars from Ernest and Evelyn Rady, 11 million from Joan and Irwin Jacobs, with the Conrad Prebys Foundation and Una Davis among the other major donors. The infrastructure is concert-hall grade in the open air: world-class acoustics, video screens, broadcast streaming capability, three professional kitchens and underground restrooms serving more than a hundred events a year. The programming pairs the symphony's summer seasons with touring pop, jazz and film-score nights, placing the Shell in the national lineage of Tanglewood, Wolf Trap and Ravinia - with a working harbor fifty feet from the stage. Delayed thirteen months by the pandemic, the venue opened as the orchestra's first permanent outdoor home in its century of existence - and instantly became San Diego's signature stage. The venue rewrote the symphony's economics as much as its acoustics: outdoor pop programming now underwrites the classical season, the bayside setting draws audiences the concert hall never reached, and the building's porous design - bikers and sailors taking in rehearsals for free - has been studied by orchestras nationally as a template for civic relevance.
