The Rave - Eagles Club

A fraternal palace with a swimming pool in the basement became one of America's strangest and busiest concert buildings. The Rave and Eagles Club at 2401 West Wisconsin Avenue in Milwaukee opened on September 13, 1927 as the 2.6-million-dollar national headquarters of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, a five-story Mediterranean Revival landmark by architect Russell Barr Williamson, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. The construction-era amenities read like a small city: a 75-by-50-foot swimming pool, two-story gym, bowling alleys, restaurant and barber shop, with a dedication party attended by 25,000 and a national convention that drew 100,000 the same year. The showpiece is the Eagles Ballroom - a 25,000-square-foot oval spring-loaded dance floor under a 43-foot domed ceiling, ringed by a balcony of luxury boxes, holding 3,500 for concerts. The modern operation stacks eight performance spaces through the building: the 1,800-capacity Rave Hall, the Miami-styled Rave II, the Eagles Hall, the Rave Bar, the Penthouse Lounge and more, hosting over 250 concerts a year - the city's most active non-arena venue. The guest ledger spans the whole modern canon - Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, Green Day, the White Stripes, Ed Sheeran, Bad Bunny, Skrillex and thousands more - with the building's reputed hauntings a running theme of band interviews and fan lore. A concert promoter bought the building in the early 1990s, coining the Rave name, and the complex - listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1986 - has run as an independent, family-held operation since. Nearly a century in, the Eagles Club remains Milwaukee's great concert oddity: a fraternal cathedral where the mosh pit shares a building with a drained 1927 swimming pool. The building's scale gives Milwaukee a touring economics few markets its size enjoy: eight rooms under one roof let promoters route everything from 400-cap club dates to 3,500-cap ballroom shows through a single address, and many acts have climbed the building's internal ladder - bar to hall to ballroom - across successive tours without ever playing another Milwaukee venue.
