Nirvana, Tool and Pearl Jam played this address when it was the Mason Jar; the room that replaced it was named America's best small venue. The Rebel Lounge at 2303 East Indian School Road in Phoenix opened on May 20, 2015, when promoter Stephen "Psyko Steve" Chilton and partner Chuckie Duff bought the fabled rock bar's building and rebuilt it from the studs. The predecessor's legend loomed over the project: the Mason Jar ran from 1979 to 2004 as Phoenix's infamous metal and hard rock haven, hosting nascent Nirvana, Tool, Pearl Jam, Eminem and Jane's Addiction under owner Franco Gagliano. Chilton - a Phoenix promoter since 2000 - kept the stage and bar in roughly their historic positions while renovating the 3,060-square-foot room completely: new sound, new lights, and a wider booking palette spanning punk, metal, indie, country and bluegrass. The room's awards shelf filled fast - Best Punk Club, Best Rock Club, Best Marquee and Best Rebooted Venue from the Phoenix New Times - capped in 2024 when Billboard named the Rebel Lounge the best venue in America under 500 capacity. The relationship with the past is knowing rather than nostalgic: the club sells "Yes, we know this used to be the Mason Jar" koozies, and its tenth-anniversary series in 2025 booked Jar-era veterans Sacred Reich and Authority Zero.
