The Republik

When Honolulu's main mid-size venue closed, the promoters who needed it most simply built their own. The Republik at 1349 Kapiolani Boulevard opened in late July 2012, created by BAMP Project - Hawaii's most active concert promoters, with over 200 shows already staged - and veteran nightclub operator Charles "Chip" Jewitt under their joint company CAMP. The trigger was the February 2011 closure of Pipeline Cafe, which left the islands without a room between the clubs and the Blaisdell Arena; BAMP signed a multi-year lease on a former restaurant space near Ala Moana Center and spent a year building it out. The result is a 10,000-square-foot concert hall holding about 1,000, fitted through an alliance with Pro Sound and Video with lighting, video and audio the operators pitched as world-class for the market. The back of the house holds the Safehouse - a 2,000-square-foot modern bar that runs as its own room on show nights and for private events. The booking role is structural: as the only true mid-size room in the islands, the Republik catches every tour that crosses the Pacific at that scale - rock, hip-hop, electronic, reggae and island acts - plus comedy, art shows and fundraisers. For Hawaii acts the room is the graduation stage between the club circuit and the arena, and BAMP's in-house promotion keeps the calendar dense year-round in a market most tours treat as a bonus date. A decade in, the venue has settled the question its founders asked in 2011: Honolulu can sustain a proper concert hall - it just needed promoters willing to own the risk themselves. The venue's existence changed Hawaii's touring math in both directions: mainland acts that once skipped the islands for want of a right-sized room now route Honolulu dates through the Republik, and BAMP's parallel festival and arena promotions - built on relationships the club generates - have made the operation the de facto gatekeeper of live music across the state.
