The Womens Museum

A 1910 livestock coliseum that became the nation's first national women's history museum, and now serves as one of Fair Park's grandest event shells. The Women's Building at 3800 Parry Avenue in Dallas was constructed in 1910 as the Fair Park Coliseum, designed by architect James Flanders for 108,000 dollars - livestock auctions by day, musical theater by night. The building's art deco face came with the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition era that reshaped Fair Park, and it stands today as a contributing property of the park's National Historic Landmark district. The signature chapter began in September 2000, when founder Cathy Bonner's team raised 30 million dollars to transform the deteriorating structure into The Women's Museum: An Institute for the Future - a state-of-the-art Smithsonian-affiliated exhibition space with design architecture by Wendy Evans Joseph. The museum drew 1.5 million visitors across eleven years but ran at a deepening loss from 2006 onward, and after failing to outrun its operating costs it closed on October 31, 2011. The city-owned building then returned to the events trade - exhibitions, weddings, film shoots, private functions - and currently serves as the temporary home of The Black Academy of Arts and Letters during renovations to that institution's own facility. The interior remains the draw: a cavernous coliseum volume behind the 1936 facade, marked by the museum-era build-out that saved the structure from collapse. Few American buildings have cycled through more identities - stock arena, exposition hall, national museum, event venue - while keeping one constant: whatever Dallas needs gathered under a big roof at Fair Park, this is where it goes. The building's event-era bookings trade directly on that layered history: film productions rent the deco facade, weddings rent the coliseum volume, and Fair Park tours still point out the Ellsworth Kelly-esque entry sculpture and grand hall the museum conversion left behind.
