Tingley Coliseum - New Mexico State Fair

A million adobe bricks and seventeen years of stop-start construction produced New Mexico's great all-purpose barn - dedicated with Roy Rogers and Dale Evans playing all nine days of the 1957 State Fair. Tingley Coliseum at 300 San Pedro Drive NE sits on the Expo New Mexico fairgrounds in Albuquerque. The project began in 1940 with Works Progress Administration funds championed by Governor Clyde Tingley, part of the fairgrounds rebuild that revived the New Mexico State Fair after a two-decade lapse; the coliseum itself finally opened in 1957 and took the governor's name. Built as a rodeo and horse-show auditorium, the arena seats 11,571 with 9,286 permanent seats, and remains the centerpiece of the State Fair each September. The concert ledger spans the whole rock era - Elvis Presley, Tina Turner, KISS, Metallica, Garth Brooks, Willie Nelson, Tool and Tom Petty among hundreds - making it Albuquerque's default arena stop for decades of tours. The sports resume is just as varied: New Mexico Scorpions hockey, Albuquerque Thunderbirds D-League basketball, Professional Bull Riders events from 1997 to 2008, Monster Jam, boxing including an early Floyd Mayweather Jr. bout, and the Gathering of Nations Powwow. Recent years brought a multimillion-dollar renewal - new house lighting, a complete arena floor and drainage rebuild, renovated lobbies, vendor spaces and HVAC - keeping the venue at more than 130 events a year. Few American arenas carry their state's history so directly: a Depression-era relief project, a governor's name, and seventy years as the room where New Mexico gathers. The adobe-era construction gives the room acoustics and sightlines no modern spec-built arena reproduces, and fair-week traditions - the horse shows, the rodeo grand entry under the flags, the midway lights outside the doors - keep the building's original 1930s purpose alive inside its 21st-century upgrades.
