Kansas City voted itself a new downtown with a hotel-and-rental-car tax - and the 276 million dollar arena that resulted has repaid the bet with over a billion dollars of economic impact. T-Mobile Center stands at 1407 Grand Boulevard on the east side of the Power and Light District. The city-owned, ASM Global-managed arena anchors a downtown that has drawn more than 8.5 billion dollars in reinvestment since the project broke ground in 2005. Two decades in, the glass drum on Grand Boulevard is the rare civic wager that hit exactly as promised: build the room first, and the city grows back around it. The building famously thrives without a permanent major-league tenant - a deliberate strategy that keeps the calendar open for concerts and tournaments rather than locking 41 nights to one team - and its consistent top-ten rankings in national box-office reports for buildings its size have validated the model twice over.
