Descending the staircase at 740 Water Street Southwest has become a Washington ritual: Union Stage, the basement music hall at The Wharf, has hosted early-career nights from Doja Cat, Orville Peck, Brent Faiyaz and Ethel Cain since opening on December 29, 2017. The owners are the Brindley brothers - Daniel, Luke and Jonathan - who learned the trade at Jammin Java, the Vienna, Virginia strip-mall club they bought in 2001 and turned into a nationally noted room that gave early stages to Paramore, Bon Iver and The Lumineers. Union Stage was their leap into the District, announced in June 2017 as the Southwest Waterfront redevelopment added The Anthem and Pearl Street Warehouse to the same few blocks, instantly making The Wharf a live-music quarter with rooms at every scale. The space spans 7,500 square feet below a street-level pub, holding about 500 standing or 200 seated, with a bar running the length of the room, a VIP section with table service, and the house Union Pie pizza kitchen feeding the late crowd; every show is all-ages. The programming mixes rising tours with underplays from established acts like The Hives, plus comedy, podcasts, drag shows and open mics - a booking breadth that fits a room designed to be the neighborhood's nightly default. In 2024 the brothers folded their growing portfolio - Jammin Java, Miracle Theatre, The Theatre at Capital Turnaround, Pearl Street Warehouse and the historic Howard Theatre - under the Union Stage Presents banner, making the Wharf basement the flagship of a six-venue independent group. For a city whose mid-size music history belongs to the 9:30 Club, Union Stage built the credible alternative: family-run, riverside and reliably a step ahead on who plays next. The pub upstairs anchors the street even on dark nights, and the basement's sound investment - a rig tuned for everything from solo songwriters to full-band hip hop - is a big reason agents route developing acts through the room on their first East Coast headline runs.
