Basements are so rare in Phoenix that opening a venue in one counted as a novelty act in itself. Valley Bar, which debuted in May 2015 below a 1949 mid-century building at 130 North Central Avenue downtown, turned that quirk into one of the city's defining nightlife rooms. The operators are Charlie Levy and Tucker Woodbury - Levy being the Stateside Presents promoter behind the Crescent Ballroom three blocks away - who spent a year wrestling ventilation codes and sump pumps to convert 8,000 subterranean square feet into a music hall, lounge and game room. The building has its own performance pedigree: it once housed The Hub art galleries and the Sub Cultural Arts Center, whose stage hosted Soundgarden, Green Day and Bad Brains, plus the famed Bickoff's Deli - history the new tenants leaned into rather than painted over. The layout rewards exploration: entry is through the alley nicknamed Punk Rock Alley, down into the Rose Room lounge - named for Arizona governor Rose Mofford, with cocktails inspired by state politicians - past a billiards and pinball room to the roughly 250-capacity music hall. The booking philosophy slots under the Crescent: acts not yet ready to fill the bigger room get a proper stage here, and the opening months alone brought Wolf Alice, Crocodiles and Joe Jonas's DNCE playing to a packed basement in November 2015. A decade of programming has ranged far beyond bands - drag nights, fashion shows, themed trivia, a weekly chess club and DJ nights spanning R&B, Latin and electronic - making the space a genuine downtown social hall rather than a single-purpose club. Ten years in, the room Levy joked was born of being "crazy and liking to work ourselves to death" has become the standard answer to a Phoenix question that once had none: where do you go downtown after dark?
