Fresno raised the money itself - seven million dollars of community fundraising - and got one of the loudest home-field advantages in western college football. Valley Children's Stadium, known for four decades as Bulldog Stadium, opened on the Fresno State campus on November 15, 1980 with a 21-14 win over Montana State. The move was transformative: the Bulldogs left 13,000-seat Ratcliffe Stadium for a 30,000-seat bowl designed by Stevens and Associates, and coach Jim Sweeney's teams promptly filled it, running through unbeaten home seasons in 1982, 1986, 1988 and 1989 as the program climbed the national rankings. Demand forced growth - a two-phase 1991 expansion added end-zone stands on the previously bare embankments and 22 sky suites, lifting capacity past 41,000 - and the record crowd of 42,881 was hit five separate times during the eighth-ranked 2001 team's run. The venue hosted the California Bowl, the Big West-versus-MAC postseason game, from 1981 to 1991, with the home team winning four of its five appearances, and staged international friendlies ahead of the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Modernization has continued in phases: FieldTurf replaced grass in 2011, an AstroTurf system engineered to regulate surface temperature followed in 2019 with Musco LED lighting, and the naming-rights partnership with the Valley Children's Healthcare network took effect in July 2022. The current configuration holds 40,727 with the playing surface named Jim Sweeney Field for the coach who opened the building, and the all-time home record - 187 wins against 61 losses through 2021 - explains the Doghouse nickname. Few mid-major programs anywhere can point to a stadium the community literally bought for itself, and the red wave that fills it on fall Saturdays remains central Californian football's biggest recurring event.
