Vicar Street

Bob Dylan played it in year two, and Irish music has treated it as the country's living room ever since. Vicar Street, at 58-59 Thomas Street in Dublin's Liberties, opened in September 1998 and has been named Irish music venue of the year five times. The venue is the creation of owner Harry Crosbie, the docklands developer behind the Point Theatre, with operations run by promoter Peter Aiken - a partnership that has kept the room supplied with the biggest names willing to play small. The first artist on the stage was local singer-songwriter Shay Cotter; the roll call since includes Dylan in 2000, Neil Young in 2003, Adele in 2008, Paul Simon and Ed Sheeran in 2011, Lana Del Rey in 2013 and the Wailers in 2025. A 2002 expansion after three months of works lifted capacity from 700 seated to roughly 1,050 seated or 1,500 standing, with the signature configuration - cabaret tables on the flat floor, tiered seats behind - preserving the intimacy that makes the room famous. Comedy is the second pillar: Ireland's major stand-ups treat multi-night Vicar Street runs as a rite, with Tommy Tiernan, Dara O Briain and Des Bishop practically in residence, alongside drama, trad music and television tapings. The Thomas Street setting matters - the venue sits in the medieval Liberties among the Guinness quarter's regeneration, and its success helped anchor the neighborhood's revival years before the distilleries and hotels followed. Artists keep returning for the same reason audiences do: at Vicar Street the back row is close, the sound is tuned for the room, and an off night is impossible to hide - which in Dublin is considered the point. Recordings made in the room have become part of Irish cultural memory - live albums and comedy specials taped at Vicar Street circulate as proof of form - and for visiting international acts, a Dublin date here has become shorthand for wanting the real audience, not just the biggest one.
