The neon goddess Diana has stood over Granville Street since 1941, and the federal government eventually made her a National Historic Site. The Vogue Theatre, at 918 Granville Street on Vancouver's Theatre Row, is one of Canada's best-preserved Art Deco performance houses. Built by the Odeon chain in 1940-41 to a Kaplan and Sprachman design, the Vogue was unusual from day one: a Moderne movie palace engineered equally for cinema and live performance, opening on April 13, 1941 with 1,347 seats across orchestra and balcony. The style is the substance - textured concrete, Vitrilux and terrazzo panels, wrought-iron screens, stainless steel mullions and an auditorium whose smooth curving walls and tiered ceiling conceal a dramatic modulated lighting system that substitutes for ornament. Odeon and later Cineplex ran the house until 1984; a 1998 restoration returned the original appearance while installing modern light and sound, and the 1993 National Historic Site designation recognized both the architecture and the rare dual-purpose engineering. Today the roughly 1,280-capacity theatre operates as a live venue under the MRG Group, hosting touring concerts, comedy and film events, and serving as a mainstay stage for the Vancouver International Film Festival, ComedyFest and the International Jazz Festival. The location concentrates the city's night economy: Granville's Theatre Row puts the Vogue steps from the Orpheum and Commodore, and the tower sign - outlined in neon, Diana on top - remains among Vancouver's most photographed landmarks. Eighty years of programming have never required remodeling the room's purpose - the rare 1941 building that was built for exactly the hybrid future that arrived. The auditorium's engineering still pays working dividends: the sound-first design that made it a dual cinema-and-stage house in 1941 gives modern touring engineers a naturally warm room, which is why acts routinely tape live sessions and specials under Diana's neon.
