The building spent 75 years closed to the public as a recording studio; now the public sells it out. Walter Studios, at 747 West Roosevelt Street on the southwest corner of 7th Avenue in downtown Phoenix, reopened in 2022 as a 600-capacity concert hall. The 1948 structure was home to Canyon Records, the pioneering label devoted to Native American music that later expanded into film production - a heritage the renovation honors rather than paints over. The operator is Walter Productions, the Phoenix collaborative founded by Dr. Kirk Strawn and known since 2009 for its fleet of oversized art cars - including the flame-throwing bus Walter - that tour Bonnaroo, EDC and festivals nationwide. The 4,500-square-foot concert hall is turnkey for touring acts: projection mapping, an LED wall, and a green room with shower, kitchenette and a recording sound booth - studio DNA kept functional - with Helmet, the Polyphonic Spree and the Dear Hunter among early sellouts. The communal spaces carry the Walter aesthetic - the Blue Bar, the Library and the Honey Bar serve small bites, craft cocktails and beers from the company's own Walter Station Brewery, with the kitchen open from 90 minutes before showtime. Booking runs through Phoenix's independent promoter network, including Danny Zelisko and Psyko Steve Chilton, folding the venue into the Roosevelt Row arts district's nightlife alongside festivals, markets and private events. The sister venue Walter Where?House holds the bigger productions across town, but the Studios room is the heart of the operation - a recording building returned to sound after three quarters of a century of silence toward the street. The Canyon Records lineage gives the venue an unusual conscience - programming nods to the building's Native American recording history - and the art-car theatricality outside the door makes even a routine club show feel like a small festival.
