When Fitzgerald's wound down its run as Houston's independent rock hub, the promoters behind it did not go looking for another old building - they built their own. White Oak Music Hall, opened in 2016 on five acres along the Little White Oak Bayou at 2915 North Main Street, two miles north of downtown, is the city's purpose-built answer to two decades of borrowed rooms. Downstairs is the anchor: the large indoor hall on the ground floor of the main building, holding 1,000 to 1,200 with a ground floor, an interior mezzanine and two exterior balconies that look back at the downtown skyline across the bayou. The design, by Houston and New York firm Schaum/Shieh, lines the two-level room with cedar slats spaced to acoustically tune the hall, with pockets of ambient lighting set into the wood - a matter-of-fact palette of steel, concrete and timber that reads more workshop than palace. The operators are Pegstar Concerts, the team whose five-year run at Fitzgerald's produced 400 to 600 shows a year; principals Will Garwood and Will Thomas assembled the site with partners and set an ambition of 500 shows annually across the complex's five stages. The complex stacks its rooms by rung: touring acts graduate from the 200-capacity Upstairs room to Downstairs, then out to the 3,000-plus capacity outdoor Lawn, with the adjacent Raven Tower bar adding its own small stage - a full career ladder on one property. Programming runs the full Houston spread - rock, country, hip-hop, R&B and Latin acts share the calendar, with most shows general admission and standing room, and reserved seating offered only case by case. The soft opening alone signalled the scale of intent, with M83, the Lumineers and the Flaming Lips christening the site before the formal four-day grand opening - and a decade on, the hall Pegstar built for itself has become exactly what the city lacked: an independent mid-size room nobody can take away.
