Every music city needs a first rung, and Houston's sits on the second floor of a bayou-side music hall with windows behind the stage. White Oak Music Hall Upstairs, the roughly 200-capacity room above the main Downstairs hall at 2915 North Main Street, lets audiences watch a band with the downtown skyline peeking through the glass at the performers' backs. The room is the smallest of the complex's indoor stages, purpose-built for up-and-coming acts by Schaum/Shieh, the Houston and New York architects who designed the 2016 complex, using the same elemental palette of steel, concrete and wood that runs through the whole building. Operator Pegstar Concerts - the independent promoter that ran Fitzgerald's for five years before building White Oak - uses Upstairs as the entry point of an on-site ladder: acts that outgrow the 200-capacity room move to the 1,200-capacity hall downstairs, then to the 3,000-plus capacity outdoor Lawn. Shows Upstairs are all general admission and standing room, with a bar in the room, and the calendar leans toward touring indie acts, local bills and genre nights that would rattle around a bigger space. The complex around it covers five acres along the Little White Oak Bayou two miles north of downtown, with five stages in total including the semi-outdoor stage at the adjacent Raven Tower bar - over 400 live events a year across the property. For Houston musicians the room carries a particular promise: the same operator books every stage on site, so a packed Tuesday Upstairs is effectively an audition for the hall below and the Lawn beyond, all within a hundred yards of the stage where the band started. The skyline windows do quiet double duty - reminding the crowd exactly which city's scene the room exists to feed, one 200-cap show at a time.
