Fort Worth built it in 340 days flat, racing the calendar to honor a Texas Centennial and a dead humorist at the same time. Will Rogers Auditorium, the 2,856-seat Art Deco theater at 3401 West Lancaster Avenue in the Cultural District, went up in 1936 as part of the Will Rogers Memorial Center and was dedicated on January 10, 1937. The complex - auditorium to the west, domed coliseum to the east, the 209-foot Pioneer Tower between them - was designed by Wyatt C. Hedrick with Elmer G. Withers and designer Herman Koeppe, and stands among the finest Art Deco ensembles in Texas, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. The money was pure New Deal arithmetic: publisher Amon G. Carter drove the project, the city issued bonds, and the federal Public Works Administration supplied a 45 percent grant of more than $725,000 plus a loan - Depression-era job relief that bought Fort Worth a permanent civic stage. The name honors Will Rogers, the Cherokee-American humorist and cowboy entertainer killed in a 1935 plane crash; Electra Waggoner Biggs's equestrian statue of Rogers on his horse Soapsuds, Riding into the Sunset, was unveiled at the center in 1947. The auditorium's acoustics made it Fort Worth's serious-music room for decades, hosting the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, opera and ballet productions, the Trapp Family Singers, Jack Benny and Billy Graham, and it still books touring concerts, comedy and graduations. The steel-and-brick interior carries rich tile and plaster detailing from the Mosaic Tile Company, and the building connects by underground tunnel to the rest of the 120-acre complex, whose barns and arenas host the Fort Worth Stock Show and major equestrian events. Nine decades on, the room reads as what it was built to be - a Depression-era promise that a livestock town could raise a proper theater, kept in Art Deco brick and still working its original job.
