A women's club built it, Judy Garland was discovered on its stage, and Amelia Earhart gave her last public appearance in the building before flying into legend. The Wilshire Ebell Theatre, at 4401 West 8th Street in Mid-Wilshire Los Angeles, opened to the public on December 29, 1927 with the west coast premiere of Sigmund Romberg's The Desert Song. The theater is the performance wing of the Ebell of Los Angeles, a women-led organization founded in 1894, whose Italian Renaissance campus by architect Sumner P. Hunt covers a 160-by-450-foot site around a tiled courtyard, with clubhouse, dining room, colonnade and fountain fronting Wilshire Boulevard. The auditorium seats about 1,270 across an 883-seat orchestra floor, a loge of 168 and a 215-seat balcony, is prized for its natural acoustics, and houses a Barton theater pipe organ maintained by the Los Angeles Theatre Organ Society. The house opened as the Windsor Square Theatre and took the Wilshire Ebell name in mid-1930; the campus cost close to a million dollars, making it the grandest women's clubhouse in America when the cornerstone's time capsule was laid in February 1927. The history keeps arriving in footnotes that would headline anywhere else - a young Frances Gumm sang here in the 1930s and left with a contract and the name Judy Garland; Earhart addressed the club in 1937 weeks before her final flight. The building is Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument number 250 and appears on the National Register of Historic Places, its original furnishings largely intact - a rarity in a city that demolishes its own past on schedule. Nearly a century on, the Ebell still owns and operates the whole campus, filling the theater with concerts, lectures, film shoots and ceremonies while the club's scholarship program - running since the First World War - quietly funds a hundred students a year.
