Wilson Theater at Vogel Hall - Marcus Center for the Performing Arts

Tony Bennett and Art Garfunkel both worked this room, which holds fewer people than some hotel ballrooms - and that is precisely its appeal. The Wilson Theater at Vogel Hall, the 465-seat recital theater of the Marcus Performing Arts Center at 929 North Water Street in downtown Milwaukee, is the jewel-box counterpart to the center's 2,125-seat Uihlein Hall. The Marcus Center itself opened on September 17, 1969 as the Performing Arts Center, a Brutalist landmark by architect Harry Weese whose riverside grounds anticipated the Milwaukee RiverWalk; the opening month alone brought the New York Philharmonic, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. Vogel Hall was designed as the complex's recital room and spent four decades hosting chamber music, cabaret, comedy and the Florentine Opera's more intimate productions before a naming gift from philanthropists Don and Kate Wilson funded a full refurbishment. The renewed theater opened on November 12, 2014 with new seats, flooring and lighting, keeping the classic red palette; a second phase in 2017 by architects LA DALLMAN added a new RiverWalk entrance, an atrium lobby, a permanent bar and full accessibility. The current layout seats 366 in the orchestra section and 95 in the loge with four wheelchair positions, plus a 16-by-20-foot cinema screen, dressing rooms and full production positions - a small hall with a working theater's toolkit. The center's name honors Ben and Ceil Marcus of the Marcus Corporation following a 1994 gift, and the campus hosts the Milwaukee Symphony's former home hall, Broadway tours and resident companies across its venues. Within that ecosystem the Wilson Theater keeps a specific job: the room where Milwaukee hears things meant to be heard up close - recitals, opera studio work, film and speakers - in a house small enough that the loge counts as the cheap seats.
