Yulman Stadium

For 39 seasons Tulane football rattled around the 75,000-seat Superdome, its crowds swallowed by the scale. Yulman Stadium, opened on September 6, 2014 at 2900 Ben Weiner Drive on the university's Uptown campus, fixed the mismatch with a 30,000-seat home built where the Green Wave belonged all along. The $75 million stadium sits between Turchin baseball stadium and the footprint of old Tulane Stadium - the fabled Sugar Bowl, which held 86,598 for the 1973 LSU game, hosted the early Saints and was demolished in 1975 after football moved downtown. The name honors Richard Yulman, retired chairman of mattress giant Serta, whose $15 million lead gift anchored the project with his late wife Janet; Saints owners Tom and Gayle Benson gave $7.5 million for Benson Field, and the Glazer family funded the premium club that bears their name. Architects Gould Evans and Lee Ledbetter kept the structure deliberately low-profile out of respect for the surrounding residential streets, with lighting engineered to spare the neighbors - a stadium designed to be a good Uptown citizen. The opening against Georgia Tech sold out, with students claiming roughly 5,000 tickets - about 40 percent of the university's entire enrollment - the largest student turnout since football left campus in 1975. The bowl carries 4,500 premium seats across the Westfeldt Terrace and the Glazer Family Club, and the tight sightlines give the American Athletic Conference program the home-field intimacy the Superdome never could. Tulane has fielded teams since 1893, and Yulman restored the oldest ritual in college football - walking to the game - to a campus that had gone two generations without it. The payoff arrived within a decade: the Green Wave's resurgent bowl-era teams have played to full Uptown houses, and the program's recruiting pitch now includes something it lacked for forty years - a home crowd that walks over from the quad rather than commuting to a dome built for somebody else.
