It is rare to drink in a bar your grandfather drank in, and rarer that the place got cooler in the meantime. Zanzabar, at 2100 South Preston Street just north of Eastern Parkway in Louisville, opened as the Zanzibar dive bar in 1938, and its distinctive Z still marks the building nearly ninety years on. The original closed in the 1980s and the space drifted through catering years as Nord's Brown Bag until 2008, when the Wettig brothers revived it as Zanzabar - keeping the 1950s fixtures and midcentury character while adding a stage, a kitchen and Kentucky's densest collection of pinball machines. The venue rebuilt its reputation fast: award-winning pub food, Louisville's only vintage arcade, weekly pinball tournaments and an indie booking policy that made the small room one of the city's most reliable stages for touring and local acts. Success created its own problem - shows sold out a 200-capacity room shared with arcade traffic - so a 2017 expansion built a dedicated L-shaped concert hall on the old patio, nearly doubling capacity to about 400 with a taller, wider stage, new sound and a proper green room. The new room kept the aesthetic intact, down to lighting programmed with a deliberately 1970s sensibility, and the separate entrance finally ended the standoff between ticketed showgoers and pinball players. The booking runs indie, punk, psych and Americana, with the venue regularly voted among Louisville's best live music rooms, its calendar filled most nights of the week alongside trivia and tournament traffic. The heated patio, the burger and the Z on the facade complete a rare arc - a neighborhood dive that became a music venue without ever stopping being the neighborhood's bar. The room's scale now sits in a useful gap for Louisville - roughly the floor of Headliners without the balcony - big enough to land national tours, small enough that the pinball machines in the next room still outnumber the stage lights.
