Ambassador Theatre

The building was showing entertainment before the United States existed. The Ambassador Theatre, at Parnell Square South on Upper O'Connell Street, was designed by John Ensor and built in 1764 as an assembly hall for the Rotunda Hospital next door - the entertainment complex existed to raise funds for the maternity hospital, a business model that kept the lights on for two and a half centuries. Moving pictures arrived in 1897 when the venue traded as the Rotund Room, and by 1910 it had become a full-time cinema with 736 seats, known simply as the Rotunda. It would end up the longest-running cinema in Dublin, operating on and off until 27 September 1999. The defining renovation came in the 1950s, when a 500-seat balcony with private boxes and a new entrance pushed capacity to 1,200 and the house reopened on 23 September 1954 as the Ambassador. Gala first-run screenings followed, most famously The Blue Max in 1966, when a First World War biplane was mounted on the roof above the entrance to mark the Irish-shot film. After the projectors went dark, promoters MCD Productions leased the building and ran it as a live music venue from 2001 to 2008, giving a generation of Dublin gig-goers their memories of the room under the plain one-word sign: Ambassador. The years since have been a rolling second act - exhibitions, one-off concerts, podcasts, comedy and corporate events in a listed building on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, now operating as a cashless venue. Dublin City Council has floated the more ambitious ending: proposals to restore the hall as a dedicated 700 to 900-seat concert venue, which would return the room to full-time music for the first time since 2008. Few venues anywhere can claim the same arc - Georgian assembly rooms, Victorian novelty screenings, golden-age cinema, rock room and event hall, all inside the same walls at the top of O'Connell Street.
