Alys Stephens Center

In September 1996, a lasting tribute to the late Alys Robinson Stephens opened on the campus of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center at 1200 10th Avenue South quickly established itself as the premier centre for arts and education in central Alabama, becoming the permanent home of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra as well as UAB's Department of Music and Department of Theatre. More than 100,000 visitors pass through its doors annually. The centre comprises four distinct performance spaces. The Jemison Concert Hall, the largest at 1,300 seats, is a European-style hall designed and built for symphonic, choral, and live-music performances, recently upgraded with a Meyer Sound system and grand drape. The Morris K. Sirote Theatre offers 351 proscenium-style seats suited to theatrical productions. The Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall provides an intimate 170-seat setting for chamber music and solo recitals. The Odess Theatre is a flexible 150-seat black-box space for experimental and small-scale work. The Alys Stephens Center is part of the broader UAB Center for the Arts, which also manages the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts, ArtPlay community art education programmes, and UAB Arts in Medicine. Venue rentals are available for private events, weddings, and corporate functions across all facilities. The ticketing office can be reached at 205-975-2787 or toll-free at 1-877-278-8457, Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM, with weekend hours on performance days opening three hours before curtain. The centre's location on UAB's Southside campus places it in one of Birmingham's most walkable corridors, near restaurants, coffee shops, and cultural institutions along 10th Avenue and 19th Street South. The building's founding mission -- to foster community through arts education, performance, and outreach -- continues to guide a season that spans classical symphonic concerts, jazz, world music, dance, and spoken-word programming.
