Ground was broken in January 1971, and by 3 November 1972 the Providence Civic Center had opened its doors as the new home court for Providence College Friars men's basketball. Over half a century later, the arena at 1 LaSalle Square in downtown Providence -- now called the Amica Mutual Pavilion after naming-rights deals with Dunkin' Donuts (2001-2022) and Amica Mutual Insurance (2022-present) -- remains one of the toughest away games in college basketball. Concert capacity reaches 14,000, with basketball configuration at 12,410 and ice hockey at 11,273. The arena floor spans 31,000 square feet beneath an 86-foot ceiling, and the concourse measures 25,000 square feet with a 9,000-square-foot lobby. Twenty luxury suites and five meeting and hospitality rooms complete the premium tier. An $80 million renovation completed in October 2008 replaced every seat in the bowl, added a centre-hung LED video display, built an enclosed sky-bridge to the Rhode Island Convention Center, and installed a new HVAC system and fire suppression technology. Current tenants include the Providence Bruins of the AHL and the Providence College Friars. Past occupants range from the Rhode Island Reds and New England Tea Men to the New England Steamrollers. Over the decades the arena has hosted sell-out performances by Elvis Presley, Elton John, Cher, and Aerosmith, along with NCAA tournament games, Disney on Ice, and professional wrestling events. The arena is part of the Rhode Island Convention and Entertainment Complex alongside the Rhode Island Convention Center and Veterans Memorial Auditorium, all operated by the Rhode Island Convention Center Authority and managed by ASM Global. Providence Station provides public transit access, and roughly 1,800 hotel rooms sit within walking distance of the building. Parking is available in the Convention Center garage and surrounding surface lots.
