Anderson Theater At Cincinnati Memorial Hall

Designed by Samuel Hannaford and Sons and completed in 1908, Cincinnati's Memorial Hall was built by the Grand Army of the Republic and Hamilton County as a tribute to the military of the city and county. The Beaux-Arts building at 1225 Elm Street overlooks Washington Park in the heart of the Over-the-Rhine neighbourhood, neighbour to Music Hall, the School for Creative and Performing Arts, and the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. At its core is the Annie W. and Elizabeth M. Anderson Theater, a 556-seat proscenium jewel-box space originally conceived for speeches. Exceptional acoustics -- words spoken on stage in a normal voice carry clearly to the back of the balcony -- allowed the room to evolve into one of the most intimate and acoustically superior concert and performance venues in the Cincinnati region. Marble staircases adorned with intricate wrought iron lead to the theatre, where decorative murals by Francis Pedretti, Tiffany chandeliers, and stencilled ceilings create a visual experience to match the sound. An $11.2 million renovation completed in 2016 -- a collaboration among the Cincinnati Memorial Hall Society, the Cincinnati Center City Development Corporation (3CDC), and Hamilton County -- preserved the building's historic character while modernising amenities. New larger restrooms, a contemporary catering kitchen, backstage crossover space for performers, a new HVAC system for year-round events, and all-new seating were added. Memorial Hall is now managed by 3CDC and hosts more than 250 events annually. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978, Memorial Hall also offers two elegant ballrooms joined by a grand hallway, a stone-chambered Parkview Room overlooking Washington Park, and a modern Studio breakout space. The theatre lends itself to concerts, film screenings, awards programmes, wedding ceremonies, lectures, and graduations.
