Assiniboine Park

For more than a century, Assiniboine Park has served Winnipeg as a year-round gathering place, nature preserve, and cultural destination. The park stretches across roughly 1,100 acres along the Assiniboine River in the south-central part of the city, making it one of the largest urban green spaces on the Canadian prairies. The Assiniboine Park Conservancy, a not-for-profit organisation founded in 2008, operates the grounds under a fifty-year lease with the City of Winnipeg, which owns the property and all its assets. Two headline attractions draw visitors from across Manitoba and beyond. The Assiniboine Park Zoo houses more than 200 animal species, with highlights including the Journey to Churchill exhibit -- one of the world's foremost polar bear conservation habitats -- and a growing collection of boreal and arctic wildlife. The Leaf, a striking horticultural showcase that opened in late 2022, contains four indoor biomes, a seasonal kitchen garden, and Gather Craft Kitchen and Bar beneath a sweeping contemporary glass canopy. Both attractions charge separate admission. Between those anchors the park fans out into a network of winding trails, wide lawns, formal gardens, and cultural venues. The Leo Mol Sculpture Garden and Gallery displays more than three hundred works by the Ukrainian-Canadian sculptor. The English Garden, dating to the park's earliest decades, remains one of Winnipeg's most photographed settings. A nature playground, a duck pond, and the renovated Park Cafe round out the family-oriented amenities. Free outdoor concerts at the Lyric Theatre stage run through the summer months. General greenspace is open twenty-four hours year-round, while ticketed attractions follow seasonal schedules. The zoo typically opens at 9 AM daily, and The Leaf biomes operate from 9 AM to 9 PM with six brief closures each year for display changes. Winter brings cross-country ski trails, outdoor skating, and holiday light festivals, keeping the park active through Manitoba's deep-freeze months. Portage Avenue and Corydon Avenue provide the main vehicle approaches, with several free parking lots scattered throughout the grounds.
