Autzen Stadium

Since 1967, Autzen Stadium has been the home of University of Oregon Ducks football, sitting on the north bank of the Willamette River roughly a mile from the main Eugene campus. The stadium opened with a capacity of 41,698 and has grown through expansions -- most significantly a 2002 project that added premium seating and a new press box -- to its current configuration of approximately 54,000 seats, making it one of the more compact Power Five conference venues in the country. What it lacks in raw size it makes up for in noise. The steep seating bowl, metal bleachers, and low roof overhang on the west side create an acoustic trap that routinely registers above 127 decibels. Sports Illustrated once called it "the most intimidating stadium in college football," and opposing coaches have frequently cited crowd noise as a factor in road losses. A 2007 seismograph test during a game against rival USC registered activity comparable to a small earthquake. Named for Portland lumberman and Oregon booster Thomas J. Autzen, the stadium replaced the ageing Hayward Field as the Ducks' football home. A $226 million renovation of the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex adjacent to the stadium has enhanced the programme's facilities in recent years, while the playing surface was converted from natural grass to FieldTurf in 2002. Knight Fund-funded improvements have made Oregon's football infrastructure among the most modern in college athletics. Beyond football, Autzen has hosted international soccer friendlies, the occasional concert, and community events. The stadium is accessible via footbridges from the main campus across the Willamette River, by the EmX bus rapid transit system, and through several parking lots in the surrounding Alton Baker Park area. Tailgating fills the adjacent fields and park spaces hours before kickoff on fall Saturdays.
