Burton Cummings Theatre

Built in 1906 as the Walker Theatre and designed by Howard C. Stone in the Beaux-Arts style, the Burton Cummings Theatre at 364 Smith Street in downtown Winnipeg is one of the finest surviving examples of grand early-20th-century theatre architecture in western Canada. The 1,579-seat venue was renamed in 2002 for Burton Cummings, the Winnipeg-born lead vocalist of The Guess Who. The theatre's interior features ornate plasterwork, a sweeping balcony, crystal chandeliers, and a proscenium arch stage with full fly-tower capabilities. After years of declining use, a major restoration in the early 2000s returned the building to active service as a performing arts venue. Today it hosts touring concerts, comedy acts, theatrical productions, corporate events, and community programming. Listed as a National Historic Site of Canada, the theatre sits in Winnipeg's Exchange District, surrounded by heritage buildings, restaurants, and cultural institutions. The venue is operated by True North Sports and Entertainment, the same group that manages the nearby Canada Life Centre (Winnipeg Jets). Parking is available in surrounding downtown lots and garages.
