Designed by Samuel Hannaford and Sons in the Beaux-Arts style, Memorial Hall at 1225 Elm Street in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine neighbourhood was built by the Grand Army of the Republic in 1908 as a monument to the city and county's veterans of the Civil War and Spanish-American War. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and overlooks Washington Park, standing next door to the larger Cincinnati Music Hall. The centrepiece is the 556-seat Annie W. and Elizabeth M. Anderson Theater, a proscenium space with exceptional acoustics -- words spoken on stage in a normal voice can be understood clearly at the back of the balcony. Decorative murals by Francis Pedretti, Tiffany chandeliers, and marble staircases with intricate wrought iron give the interior its distinctive character. An 11.2-million-dollar renovation completed in December 2016 added air conditioning, a modern catering kitchen, theatrical and AV upgrades, and year-round event capability while preserving the historic fabric. Operated by 3CDC, Memorial Hall hosts more than 250 events per year including concerts, comedy, film screenings, theatrical performances, family entertainment, and the Longworth-Anderson Series of nationally recognised contemporary artists. Two ballrooms seating up to 208 each, the intimate Parkview Room overlooking Washington Park, and a versatile studio round out the event spaces. The building also houses a collection of over 40 artworks and artefacts of local civic and military history, including a wreath said to have adorned Abraham Lincoln's casket as it passed through Columbus.
