Built in 1878 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1975, Cincinnati Music Hall at 1241 Elm Street is one of the most recognisable buildings in the city and among the finest concert theatres in the country. The Venetian Gothic structure in the Over-the-Rhine neighbourhood is home to the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (the nation's sixth-oldest), the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, Cincinnati Opera (the nation's second-oldest opera company), Cincinnati Ballet, and the May Festival -- the longest-running choral festival in the Western Hemisphere. Springer Auditorium, the main performance space named for founding patron Reuben Springer, seats 2,289 for symphony performances and 2,439 for Cincinnati Pops. Prior to a 2016-2017 renovation, the hall was the second-largest traditional auditorium or opera house by capacity in the nation; seating was reduced in favour of larger, more comfortable chairs with improved sightlines. A 1,300-seat ballroom with a barrel ceiling and hardwood floor handles receptions, exhibitions, and fashion shows. The 143-million-dollar renovation, closed for 14 months and completed in October 2017, added 30,000 square feet of usable space, modernised acoustics, upgraded the HVAC systems, and restored the building's Victorian-Gothic decorative elements. Approximately half the funding came from private donors and the remainder from public sources including the City of Cincinnati and State of Ohio tax credits. The developer partner was 3CDC. Over the decades, the stage has hosted legends from Ella Fitzgerald and Sergei Rachmaninoff to Yo-Yo Ma and The National. The renovation of Washington Park directly across the street has further enhanced the experience, surrounding Music Hall with trendy restaurants, the School for Creative and Performing Arts, the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, and Memorial Hall. The Cincinnati Arts Association operates the venue.
