Designed by the architectural firm Izumi, Arnott, and Sugiyama in Estevan brick and Manitoba Tyndall stone, the Conexus Arts Centre opened on August 24, 1970, as the Saskatchewan Centre of the Arts. The Main Theatre, now branded the Capital Auto Theatre, seats 2,031 in continental-style arrangement across a main floor and three balconies. A large stage front lowers hydraulically to form an orchestra pit for up to 100 musicians, making the hall suitable for everything from full symphonic performances to touring Broadway musicals and rock concerts. The centre has been Southern Saskatchewan's premier destination for performing arts since its opening. It immediately became home to the Regina Symphony Orchestra, replacing downtown cinemas like the Regina Theatre, the Grand Theatre, and the Capitol Theatre as the city's primary stage venue. From its earliest days, the centre attracted internationally renowned travelling performers as diverse as Monty Python's Flying Circus and classical soloists, and it continues to alternate Telemiracle hosting duties with Saskatoon's TCU Place. In addition to the main theatre, the complex houses a Convention Hall with capacity for 1,400 in seminar arrangement or 1,000 for banquets, along with various conference rooms and lobby display areas. Two sealed truck loading bays provide direct access to the stage area, with unlimited bus and truck parking available without permits.
