Gillioz Theatre - Springfield

Built in 1926 by regional bridge builder M.E. Gillioz on the newly designated Route 66, the Gillioz Theatre at 325 Park Central East in Springfield, Missouri, is a Spanish Colonial Revival gem that originally served as both a vaudeville house and a movie palace. Constructed with steel and concrete -- wood was used only for handrails, doors, and doorframes -- the 300,000-dollar theatre reflected its builder's bridge-engineering background. Gillioz secured a 100-year lease on a 16-foot-wide strip of property bordering Route 66 to ensure the theatre would catch the eye of travellers on that historic highway. After decades of operation, the Gillioz screened its last film in the summer of 1980. The building sat vacant until a passionate community effort raised approximately 1.9 million dollars for restoration. The theatre reopened in 2006 and is now operated by the nonprofit Gillioz Center for Arts and Entertainment. The intimate 1,044-seat auditorium hosts concerts, comedy, film screenings, conferences, theatre, and opera. The ornate decor is largely original and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Gillioz is located in the Springfield Public Square Historic District, within walking distance of the Landers Theatre and other downtown cultural venues. Construction used reinforced steel and poured concrete exclusively, a method unusual for theatres of the era and reflecting Gillioz's expertise in bridge engineering. The original 300,000-dollar construction cost was substantial for small-city Missouri in the mid-1920s. Interior details include ornate plasterwork, painted ceilings, and a proscenium arch that has survived largely intact through both the theatre's decades of disuse and its eventual restoration. Sitting at the intersection of Route 66 heritage tourism and a revitalised downtown Springfield arts district, the Gillioz draws audiences from across the Ozarks region. Programming rotates between nationally touring musicians, comedians, classic film screenings, and locally produced theatrical and operatic works, giving the venue a broad cultural role that extends well beyond its compact seating chart.
