Hayward Field is a world-renowned track and field stadium on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon, widely regarded as the spiritual home of American distance running. The current facility was completely rebuilt between 2018 and 2020 with a nine-storey tower, 12,650 permanent seats expandable to over 25,000, and state-of-the-art timing and results technology. The venue hosted the 2022 World Athletics Championships and the 2024 United States Olympic Track and Field Trials. The original Hayward Field dates to 1919 and is named after legendary Oregon track coach Bill Hayward. The site has hosted more NCAA championships than any other outdoor track facility in the country and played a central role in the founding of Nike -- co-founder Phil Knight ran for the Oregon Ducks, and co-founder Bill Bowerman coached there. The annual Prefontaine Classic, a Diamond League meeting named after Oregon distance-running icon Steve Prefontaine, is held at the venue each spring. Eugene has carried the unofficial title of "TrackTown USA" since the 1970s, and Hayward Field sits at the centre of that identity. The rebuilt stadium features a Beynon BSS 2000 track surface, a nine-storey observation and timing tower, and broadcast-ready infrastructure that meets World Athletics and Olympic standards. Temporary seating can expand the venue well beyond its permanent 12,650 seats for major championship events. Beyond elite competition, Hayward Field hosts University of Oregon home meets for the Ducks' men's and women's track and field teams, which rank among the most storied programmes in collegiate athletics. The surrounding campus area includes Pre's Trail, a running path named after Steve Prefontaine that winds along the Willamette River, reinforcing the inseparable link between the university, the city, and the sport.
